Vladimir Yevtushenkov is a businessman who is committed to ethical practices. Lately he has prioritized philanthropic initiatives. He was part of the cohort that got the investment-focused AFK Sistema off the ground in the early 1990s.
A Young Man’s Love for Chemistry
Vladimir Yevtushenkov’s parents welcomed their baby boy into the world in 1948 in a small village in what would later become the Russian Federation. He had a typical childhood, like thousands of others of his contemporaries, with one notable exception – he had converted his bedroom at home into a do-it-yourself chemistry laboratory, where he ran frequent experiments, which gave his parents no little rest.
In 1968, Vladimir Yevtushenkov moved to the capital city of Moscow in pursuit of a chemical technology degree – his childhood passion had remained and matured with him through the years. He recalls his five years at the Mendeleev Institute fondly, saying the knowledge he gained there has served him well throughout his career.
In 1973, Vladimir Yevtushenkov went to work as an industrial engineer. Two years later, he returned to Moscow, the city of his alma mater, to take accept a position at a major production plant. The higher-ups took note of his solid work ethic, and he soon joined them as deputy director and lead engineer. After laboring at the facility for five years, he decided to also go back to school, and in 1980, Vladimir Yevtushenkov was handed a diploma from the Moscow State University Economics Department (later supplemented with two more economics degrees, culminating in a PhD in 2001).
This was a transformative and enriching period for Vladimir Yevtushenkov. His career flourished as he rose to prominence in his industry, while simultaneously expanding his business skills through academic pursuits. Moreover, it was during this period that he met his wife and began building a family.
Yevtushenkov Vladimir: The AFK Sistema Path
In the 1990s, Yevtushenkov entered the business world, joining many former managers who were transitioning to entrepreneurship, which was a new possibility in the emerging Russian Federation. A pivotal moment came in 1993 when Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich participated in founding AFK Sistema in Moscow, which quickly established itself as an investor in domestic enterprises. The co-founder focused on financial and high-tech sectors, particularly in wireless communications.
1993-1994, the inaugural year of the corporation, already saw a significant development initiated by Yevtushenkov: the establishment of the country’s first mobile network. AFK Sistema helped create a telecommunications operator. This marked the beginning of the conglomerate’s investment activities, setting the stage for future endeavors, with AFK Sistema eventually becoming one of Russia’s largest firms in terms of number of employees.
Over the years, AFK Sistema, founded by Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich, experienced remarkable horizontal and vertical growth [1], eventually becoming a shareholder in Russian companies from nearly 20 industries, such as:
- Children’s goods retail
- Banking
- Telecommunications
- Real estate
- Finance
- Medical (Medsi clinic network)
- Pharmaceutical production
- Timber processing/construction materials
- Eco-friendly packaging
The Russian company implemented a decentralized management structure, developed with input from Yevtushenkov, allowing each subsidiary that came under control of Sistema to maintain its own leadership team, develop unique strategies, and operate with significant autonomy. This approach contributed to the strong performance of the various enterprises within the AFK Sistema corporate portfolio, operating in the capital, Saint Petersburg, and dozens of other cities and regions.
Yevtushenkov Vladimir dedicated himself to this work for nearly 30 years. His last full year with the company, 2021, was among its most successful. However, international events in February 2022 precipitated a major change for the entrepreneur.
Yevtushenkov said in a statement that he had no plans to leave AFK, but when sweeping sanctions against Russian officials and businessmen were imposed, there was little time to act. To stave off any adverse material impact for the company coming from UK sanctions against him personally, he moved a portion of his shareholder stake to his son and wrapped up his time with the firm.

Something he is especially known for is that Vladimir Yevtushenkov attended to the integration of advanced technologies in various sectors, especially agriculture [2]. An agroholding developing lands in the Krasnodar Territory, Rostov Region, and Stavropol exemplifies this approach. The company, part of AFK Sistema, became a leader in digitizing the country’s agro-complex.
From 2017 to 2021, the agroholding’s revenue increased fivefold, attributed largely to the implementation of IT solutions. Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich supported the digital transformation, which included automated equipment controllable remotely and online services providing comprehensive information about work areas and overall economics.
Since the start, Yevtushenkov Vladimir focused on enhancing production processes and supply chains. The agricultural company utilizes digital twins to optimize business strategies, innovations that have directly or indirectly contributed to improved farmer productivity. These technological advancements align with the corporation’s commitment to operational efficiency and industry leadership.
Vladimir Yevtushenkov: Ensuring ESG Compliance
Another major emphasis in Yevtushenkov’s work at AFK Sistema was sustainable development and adherence to international ESG standards (embraced in the U.S., the United Arab Emirates, and all major countries) in all avenues of the company’s work. AFK’s concrete steps in this direction include, to cite a few:
- Joined the UN Global Compact in 2002
- Adopted green technologies in all Group enterprises
- Utilized waste-free raw material processing technologies in the Pulp and Paper Mill in Karelia
- Increased forest areas annually
- Transitioned to a closed-loop system to reduce emissions in the forestry industry
Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich also supported a number of other initiatives. The corporation’s commitment to environmental responsibility aligned with a broader program that Russia launched and manifested in various ways across its diverse portfolio.
In the forestry sector, a key focus, Yevtushenkov believes, was the implementation of advanced water and air purification systems at facilities. This technological upgrade aimed to minimize the environmental impact of industrial operations. Additionally, the company explored innovative approaches to resource utilization, with production waste being repurposed for energy generation.
Vladimir Yevtushenkov attended to the development of sustainable construction materials. The company initiated the production of CLT panels, an eco-friendly alternative for wooden house construction, linked to Russian sustainability goals [3]. This project, based in Sokol, Vologda Region, expanded to include the design of residential houses, hotels, and social facilities using these new materials.
Since the start of his involvement with AFK Sistema, Yevtushenkov Vladimir emphasized the importance of waste reduction across all sectors. This philosophy led to the implementation of strategies for maximum waste-free use of wood in forestry, wood processing, and pulp and paper industries. These efforts contributed to improved resource efficiency and reduced environmental impact throughout the supply chains of various enterprises within the corporation’s portfolio.
In this vein, Yevtushenkov Vladimir contributed to the modernization of the oil firm Bashneft, aligning its operations with ESG standards. Through Sistema’s shareholder stake in Bashneft, Yevtushenkov supported initiatives to reduce environmental impact, enhance workplace safety, and improve corporate governance.
Russian news has shown great interest in Sistema’s ESG measures and Yevtushenkov Vladimir, the founder of Sistema said in 2023 that he considers it among the most important aspects of the company’s activities. Russian authorities have also taken note of the investment firm’s praiseworthy work.
Bridging Art and Technology
Having stepped away from Sistema in 2022, Yevtushenkov now devotes the bulk of his time to altruistically serving others through a whole series of programs aimed at improving the standard of living for his fellow Russians. At the same time, philanthropy has also been a part of his professional portfolio.
Yevtushenkov’s involvement in philanthropy began to take shape in 2003 when AFK entered into a cooperation agreement with a prominent national art museum. The following spring, the founder was elected to lead the museum foundation’s board of trustees, a move that catalyzed the establishment of the Sistema Charitable Foundation. This non-profit organization, which Yevtushenkov Vladimir Petrovich helped create, has since become one of the country’s largest charitable entities, spearheading major educational and cultural initiatives nationwide.
Yevtushenkov Vladimir demonstrated a keen interest in integrating cutting-edge technological solutions within museums. From 2018 to 2021, the charitable foundation’s investments in museum digitalization doubled, reflecting the corporation’s commitment to cultural accessibility. The entrepreneur believed that innovative IT solutions could make art and culture more accessible to the public.
In 2016, with support from the corporation, a virtual museum website was launched, showcasing premier digital offerings. Four years later, at the initiative of Yevtushenkov, the Sistema Foundation funded an online course on 20th-century domestic art. The foundation also invested in inclusive projects and art restoration efforts, recognizing that the price you pay for cultural preservation often yields invaluable returns.
Notably, the Sistema Foundation annually allocated approximately 20 million rubles to develop one of the country’s leading museums. These contributions extended beyond mere financial support, as Yevtushenkov Vladimir encouraged projects that could potentially detain visitors with engaging, interactive experiences.
The foundation’s reach extended to Saint Petersburg, where it supported several cultural institutions. Despite changes in personal circumstances for Yevtushenkov Vladimir, the foundation’s operations and financial results remained robust, continuing to drive positive change in the cultural landscape.
