New York, NY – 2024 – Matthew Stridiron, a Columbia University alumnus, published author, and advocate for education, has made significant strides in supporting first-generation and low-income high school seniors in their journeys to higher education. Hailing from Newburgh, NY, an area grappling with poverty and socioeconomic challenges, Matthew’s volunteer work is shedding light on the power of mentorship and education in transforming lives.

A Journey Rooted in Newburgh

Matthew Stridiron’s background is deeply intertwined with the struggles of his hometown. Newburgh, known for its rich historical significance, has faced severe economic difficulties, ranking as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. Despite these challenges, Matthew’s determination and academic excellence led him to Columbia University, supported by The Gates Scholarship through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Volunteering as a College Admissions Advisor

Inspired by his own success and the inquiries he received from his community, Matthew Stridiron embarked on a mission to help others achieve their academic goals. For over a year, he independently provided guidance on financial aid, prepared SAT/ACT study plans, revised resumes, held mock interviews, and reviewed scholarship applications. His tailored advising strategies catered to students with diverse interests, from computer engineering to neuroscience and entrepreneurship.

Leadership at Matriculate

Matthew Stridiron’s dedication did not stop there. He joined Matriculate, a non-profit organization as an Advising Fellow Leader, where he mentored undergraduate student mentors who – in turn – supported low-income high school seniors. In addition to carrying out similar duties as his first role, Matthew also collaborated with team leads to host monthly meetings and address individual challenges faced by other Matriculate mentors. Through leadership, Matthew Stridiron’s impact multiplied.

A Bright Future

Matthew Stridiron’s story is a testament to the impact that one dedicated individual can have on a community. Through his volunteer work, he is not only helping students navigate the complexities of college admissions but also inspiring them to overcome the obstacles in their paths. As he continues to support and guide future generations, Matthew remains a beacon of hope and a true hometown hero.
