David Ohnstad and the Knights of Columbus Champion the Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities in Minnesota

Summary: David Ohnstad of Minnesota proudly supports the Knights of Columbus Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities, a significant initiative aimed at raising funds and awareness for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This year’s campaign took place during the first three weekends of May, and volunteers can further assist by participating in the upcoming Special Olympics Bowling Tournament.

[Minnesota] – [2024] – David Ohnstad, a dedicated community member from Minnesota, is proud to announce his ongoing support and participation in the Knights of Columbus Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities. This heartfelt campaign, often affectionately referred to as the “Tootsie Roll Drive,” is a major initiative aimed at raising funds and awareness for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The Knights of Columbus have long been committed to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Through various fundraising efforts, including collecting donations outside local stores and churches, they work tirelessly to make a positive impact. In recognition of their donation, contributors are often given a Tootsie Roll, though the campaign’s true focus is on the meaningful assistance provided to those in need.

David Ohnstad’s involvement in this campaign is deeply personal. “This fundraiser is for handicapped individuals, which is very close to my heart as I have a handicapped aunt,” says Ohnstad. “I’ve been participating in this drive since I was around ten years old, alongside my grandfather. It usually coincides with his birthday, and his one request is always to spend time together handing out Tootsie Rolls. It’s a wonderful way to make a difference and stay connected with our community.”

This year, the campaign took place during the first three weekends of May. The Knights of Columbus encourage everyone to volunteer and support their efforts, particularly in the upcoming Special Olympics Bowling Tournament. Those interested in volunteering can visit mnknights.org, navigate to the Bowling Competition section, and select the date and location they wish to support.

Members of the Knights of Columbus are reminded to use positive, respectful language when referring to people with intellectual disabilities. David Ohnstad of Minnesota emphasizes that this respectful approach ensures that all communications, whether in council bulletins, committee reports, posters, or flyers, are considerate and promote dignity.

The Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus also emphasizes that there is no official tie to Tootsie Rolls or their manufacturer. While the nickname “Tootsie Roll Drive” is commonly used due to the high visibility of the campaign, it is recommended to refer to the initiative as the “Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities.” This terminology better reflects the true purpose of the campaign, which is to highlight the positive impact of the funds raised rather than focus on a specific candy.
